Santa Fe Century, 2003, 25 Miles

I wasn't in shape for anything but the 25 mile ride. It was another interesting day. Up at 5:30am and drive for an hour, register and ride, then drive an hour back. It wouldn't have been so bad but I missed the 25 mile turnaround, and rode an extra 6 miles down and up "Heartbreak Hill." After that all I could do was spin at a slow to moderate pace. Going back was all against the wind too. The last mile I went so hard that when I finished I had to stop and get off the bike or fall over. I should have turned around at 37:36.00 minutes. Then back in 41:38.00 minutes for a total time of 1:19:14.00 and around 31 miles. Would have been a few minutes faster than that too as I wouldn't have been so tired from climbing that hill. It was fun though. I will certainly be there next year, if all goes well. With my money troubles, not being able to afford a healthy diet, I can't train like I need/used to. Some days I only eat once. Maybe next year.

I must say, I had too much break this winter. I should have worked out more. But this day was one to remember. I entered this bike race just to see what would happen. I only did the half 'cause there's no way I could do all 100 miles (and the 25 was way too short, also if you're going to go 75 then you may as well do the 100). The course was from Santa Fe to Galisteo and back. I felt great going out; had a chance to catch lots of people because you could start the race any time you wanted (OK, I guess it wasn't a real race). We had a headwind going out too, but it was almost all downhill and plenty of people to draft. I felt great coming back in. The legs were shot, though, as on the last couple of miles going into Santa Fe I didn't have any power. It wasn't hot either. And to stay hydrated you can't beat a Camelback. Then, with about 2 miles to go, I flatted. My rear tire picked up a piece of wire. The goo didn't take right away and I had to stop and re-inflate the tire. It lasted to the finish and went flat again. I had a blast! I can't wait till next year! I am so going to be there! Who knows, I may even go for the whole century.

Well. This race was interesting to say the least. I started out feeling good and settled quickly. At least that's what I thought. At about the mile point a baby polar bear jumped on my back and I realized that I had gone out too fast again. I slowed slightly under the weight and kept a good pace until about the 5k mark at about 18 minutes. That's where they had a water stop. The guy handing out water dropped mine and I was left without water. It wouldn't have been so bad except the heat was almost unbearable. Almost instantly, the baby polar bear got off and the mama bear got on. I was in big trouble. I slowed and slowed. I was miserable. The heat, no water, blisters; everything went wrong. It took all of my concentration and effort just to keep running. I so wanted to stop. I finally, after what seemed like an eternity of hellish running, I finished 20th overall and 4th in my age group out of 43 runners. I am definately not going to do the triathlon this year. But I'll keep training and see what happens next year. There may be a couple more races I can get into this year but I think this running season is pretty much over. See you on the roads....

It was another beautiful running day here in Santa Fe. I positioned myself so that I wouldn't go out too fast. Once the race started I felt myself pushing even though I was going strong. I didn't last long at that pace. I just couldn't get the legs to crank. I had been feeling tired for 2 weeks now. I don't think I'm eating right. The race was a nice race even though it had some up and downs. I just felt lousy most of the way and I ran lousy too. I debated whether or not to retire but that's not what I'll do. I just need to get my diet on track; Quit eating all the junk and get some supplements into it. It was a very dissappointing day. It was a very small race. I finished 23 over all and 3 in my age group. This was another race I could've finished high (2 or 3 overall) but I'm so out of shape I ended up just doing poorly. I've planned on one more race this year, on July 8th, and I was going to do a triathlon on July 28th but I don't think I'm prepared. Maybe next year.... I'll see.

It was a near perfect day for running a road race. I positioned myself far back in the field at the start so I wouldn't go out too fast. It worked, and I settled quickly. However, I felt myself pushing pretty hard at the beginning anyway. The way out was uphill and the way back was all downhill. I tried to conserve and slow down but ended up just trying to keep a pace and not let anyone pass. Coming back I felt I could have gone faster if I was in better shape. I am getting old.... I finished 20th overall and 3rd in my age group. If I was in shape I could have won this race. Winning time was 17:22. It was a tough race but I don't think it was that tough... Kind of a disappointing day even though I placed high. I can run faster than that!

The day was a little cold and there were around 50 people in the race (men/women; a small race). I started a little fast, and tried to just maintain a pace. This was my first race back for about 3 years so I wanted to settle early. The course was two laps around the compound (and a little more) where I was working but the distance was right on and since I took off fast the second lap I faded. I felt OK but just couldn't go. At the finish there was no one near me; no one to try and catch and no one coming in from behind so I just kind of brought it home. I was happy with the race. It was nice to know I still got it.... I finished in 11th overall and 3rd in my age group! Winning time was high 14/low15 minutes for you people who thought it was a slow race.

The day was nice and there were around 120 people in the race (men/women). I started fine, maybe a little fast, and about a mile out I hit a wall. It was one of those impenetrable walls that are made of granite and basalt, many layers deep. I could not break through. I just kept getting slower and slower and slower. I felt like stopping when my nose started bleeding but I kept going. I don't know what went wrong and still don't to this day. I was in pain the whole way. I haven't run a step since that day either, I decied to give my body a rest while I'm in school. At least for a while. I'll start with some weight training or some bicycling around the end of November/beginning of December. That race hurt.

The day was nice and there were about 100-120 people (men/women) in the race. I started a little fast and faded a little, but managed to hold off two and catch one more in the last 200m of the race. I almost caught a second runner, one of the college runners, but I didn't have any kick left in me after the other three. I finished a respectable 12th. It was an excellent race for me. I ran a time trial the week before to see about where I'd be and only managed to run a 22:41, so a huge improvement on race day. This leads me to think the course was short or my time trial was long, oh, well.
